Other Functions for the
Economic Development |
| Privatization of State-owned enterprises
and measures undertaken for developing a capital market.
|
| In January 1995, a "Privatization Commission"
was formed with the intention of transferring the State-owned
enterprises stage by stage to Private entrepreneurs with the
exception of some specific enterprises which must necessarily
be under Government control . Above measures are being supplemented
with the formation of "Valuation and Land Analyzing Committee".

| In order to create easy access to capital for
the enterprising economic units, some measures are being taken
to develop a stock and shares market.

Co-ordination with external
economic and technical co-operations |
| For external economic and technical co-operation
matters either bilaterally or with international economic and
monetary organisations, coordination within the prescribed policy
framework are being carried out by the Ministry of National
Planning and Economic Development.

Regional Economic Co-operation. |
| In July 1997, Myanmar duly became a member country
of ASEAN. By signing the AFTA and the Framework Agreement on
ASEAN Investment Area(AIA), the following benefits will accrue
: |

-foreign investment will increase due to inflow of more investments
made by member states and states outside the organisation |
| |
-more investments, will promote more production enhancing
increased export |
| |
- enlargement of trade |
| |
- emergence of new enterprises which paves the way for more
job opportunities |
| |
- transfer of high technology |
| |
- development of small and medium scale industries, spare
parts and ancillary industries |
| |
- expanded co-operations in the fields of trade, investment,
tourism, education, science and technology, social and human-resources
development
In August 1997, Myamnar became a member country of BIMSTED
(Economic Development of Bangaladesh, India, Myanmar, Srilinka
and Thai) which has as its principal objectives to promote
rapid economic growth of member states through co-operative
projects in the sectors of trade, investment, industrial technology,
tourism, agriculture, energy, infrastructure and transport.

| To get accurate, complete and regular
Statistics is important in formulating the policy decisions
regarding the economic, social and administrative matters in
conformity with the actual situation of the country and it is
being carried out by the Ministry of National Planning and Economic
Development. |

Equipment control in state
sector. |
| The equipment control committee (E.C.C.)
has formed to lay down policy, directive and to execute the
maximum capacity and full utilization of the state-owned equipment. |
