On 1972, the Government of
the Revolutionary Council while introducing a new administrative
system for the whole country established a National Archives
Department under the Ministry of National Planning and
Finance with an initial staff of 34 members. In 1973 it
moved to its present site and become a third grade Department
manned by 114 persons headed by a Director General. It
became a second grade Department on 1990 March and was
placed under the Ministry of National Planning and Economic
Development in 1993.
1.2
The first backlog Collections was of the British
period (1835-1948) acquired from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and the 14 States and Divisions of Myanmar. Then in 1982 to
strengthen and improve the Department a project document was
signed by the UNESCO under the title "Strengthening of
National Archives".
1.3
The Department gradually improved in Archives
administration and Records Management along with strengthening
of microfilming and reprographic activities and also a conservation
laboratory.
1.4
The National Records and Archives Law was duly
enacted in September 1990. With the enactment of the Law the
National Records and Archives Supervisory Body was formed
to guide and supervise the conservation and preservation of
the national records and archives in its entirety and to encourage
archival research and advisory activities and to promote the
development of archival studies.
The Amending Law was enacted on 21-2-2007
by the State Peace and Developing Council as Law No 2/2007
,where by section6,12,14 of chapter 4 and section 18 of chapter
7 were substituted.
1.5
In 1991,the procedures relating to the National
Records and Archives Law was prescribed. This procedures has
been revised and repeated by the procedures relating to the
National Records and Archives Law 2000 which is now currently
in use since then.

The institution is a member of the International
Council on Archives (ICA) and has close affiliations with South
East Asia Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives
( SARBICA ).

Aims and Objects
2.1
The aims
and objects of the National Archives Department are :
(a)To conserve and preserve the national records
and archives in its entirety;
(b)To
retrieve those records and archives which had migrated to a foreign
land; those that are in possession of any other organization and of any individual;
(c)To give guidance in the promotion and advancement
of Records Management and Archives Administration in Myanmar.
